Get Started Writing Fiction: workshop

Get Started Writing Fiction: workshop

Do you dream of writing fiction but keep staring at a blank screen? Perhaps you have a brilliant idea but don’t know how to turn it into the plot of a great novel.

This workshop is designed to support people who are at the early stages of becoming a fiction writer. We want to help you to gain the confidence to put your ideas on paper.

When is the workshop:

Saturday 8 June 2024

Time: 11am to 1pm (runtime 2 hours)

Venue: our bookshop at 2 The Waterloo in Cirencester

Group size:  Maximum 12 people

Cost: £22 per person

Join our comprehensive two-hour workshop where we’ll discuss:

  • Plotting – how to put together the building blocks of a novel
  • writing techniques – do you use Word, iPad, Google Docs, a speech-to-text dictation tool, or perhaps a plotting app for writers?
  • Finding your perspective – do you write in the first person (I did this) or in the third person (they did that).
  • The stars and the extras – the basics of how to identify your characters and give them a believable role in your story
  • Understanding genres – do you fit within any of the defined categories? And what does it mean if you don’t?
  • The publishing process – a quick look at the stages of publishing a book, and the main routes into print (and why all of them can be great options)
  • What happens after your novel is in print

Who is it for?

This is an in person workshop for both new and established authors. You’ll be the sort of person who knows you really want to write fiction but you’ve either tried and got stuck, or you feel overwhelmed by the scale of the task and don’t know where to begin. It’s easy to feel daunted by writing, particularly if this is your first foray into writing novels and short stories. This workshop aims to give you a basic toolkit to help you decide where to go next in a positive and supportive two-hour session.

How will it work?

This workshop is a simple ticketed event. With a maximum group size of twelve people, this will be the ideal opportunity to ask the questions that matter the most to you.

The first focus of the session is to share information with you. The second focus is to provide a rare opportunity to meet a publishing expert in a relaxed and friendly environment where you can discuss the elements of writing which are specifically puzzling you.

What are the aims of this workshop?

  • Gain confidence that you’re on the right track as a writer
  • Join a supportive event where you can ask questions about fiction writing and publishing
  • Gain practical guidance on how to turn your ideas into a fabulous read
  • Build your confidence about the pathway ahead
