What does a book editor do?
Our editing process is adapted to each work and tends to involve personal discussion with the author. But you may find it helpful to understand the different aspects of editing involved in producing a work to a publishable standard.
A development edit involves highlighting areas where the narrative seems to lack logic or coherence and this can be really helpful for authors who value having someone on hand who cares as much about your work as you do. Often the solutions are easier than you think, and an editor is just the person you need to help you find them.
A line edit is a fascinating aspect of a book editor’s role. Your editor will go through your work line by line, flagging up areas which may lack clarity. The editor’s job is to recognise your unique voice and to help you use it. By the end of the editing process, your editor will know the work almost as well as you do!
Copy editing is designed to check for continuity errors. Did you change a character name halfway through? Do locations get confused? When you have spent a long time editing your own work, you may miss these small errors which have crept in along the way. A copy editor will help iron these out.
Proofreading is designed to capture any last typos. We all make them and proofreading is also a useful process for authors who live with dyslexia and other writing challenges. A number of our authors experience dyslexia and you may find it helpful to know that this is not an obstacle to pursuing your dreams as an author.
